First Generation Scholars

First Generation Scholars Program

First generation students are the first in their family to attend college. These students face multiple challenges in obtaining a high school diploma and a college degree. The First Generation Scholars Program (FGSP) is designed to address these needs in four areas- academics, personal development, social integration and financially. When compared to other college students, first generation students are more likely to: be minorities, enrolled on a delayed basis, from low-income families, less academically prepared (requiring more remedial coursework), lack the knowledge of time management and budget management, and family support. Studies show that students who are the first in their families to attend college may face extra challenges, because the student and their family members lack information about the college experience. Therefore, the members of this organization will take on the role as peer mentors and work closely with the scholars to offer guidance and ensure that they stay on track throughout high school and college.

Mission

The mission of the foundation (SISTERS, Inc.) is to dramatically support high schools in improving their graduation rates as well as aid in the improving the rate First Generation enter college and earn a degree. The FGSP will provide at risk high school students with academic, personal, and social development assistance providing financial support through the use of scholarships for students who are the first in their family to attend a college or university. The FGSP will help bridge the gap for these students by developing practical skills and providing resources needed for the students to earn a high school diploma, a college degree, and build a solid foundation for successful lives long after graduation.
